Tottenham confirm Juan Foyth is sidelined until September

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed that defender Juan Foyth has sustained a lateral ligament injury to his left ankle and that is expected to keep him out of action until September at the least. The Argentina international picked up the injury during the Audi Cup final against Bayern Munich and he is now set to miss the beginning of the new Premier League season.

“After undergoing assessment over the past few days, we can confirm that Juan Foyth has sustained a lateral ligament injury to his left ankle following a challenge in our Audi Cup match against Bayern Munich. The Argentina international, who will miss the opening two games of the season due to suspension, will now undergo a period of rehabilitation and is expected to return to training in September,” a statement on the club’s official website read.

Foyth has been Spurs’ fourth-choice centre-back behind Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez but he also has the versatility to feature on the right side of the defence. As such, he remains a valuable member of the squad and thankfully, he has not suffered a major setback ahead of the new Premier League campaign.

Spurs start the league season with a home game against Aston Villa and they should be fancied to secure all three points. However, their next challenge would come against Manchester City on the road and that is bound to test their credentials despite outclassing the Citizens in the Champions League quarter-final last season on the away-goal rule.

In Premier League terms, Spurs have lost each of the past four meetings versus the reigning champions and they need to come up with a strong performance in order to at least grab a point from Pep Guardiola’s side. Meanwhile, the north London giants have strengthened the squad further with the additions of Giovani Lo Celso and Ryan Sessegnon on deadline day. The former of those has arrived on a season-long loan from Real Betis with the option to buy at the end of the season.
